Hemp & Hempoxies Research Hub
Industrial hemp is one of the most versatile crops on Earth: food, fibre, building materials, plastics and even battery-grade carbon. This hub brings together the science, the law and the research of Landry Industries, including the Hempoxies bio-based materials platform.
What is industrial hemp?
Industrial hemp is Cannabis sativa grown for its seeds, fibre and stalks rather than for intoxicating effects. What separates hemp from marijuana in law is its THC content: in Canada, industrial hemp has 0.3% THC or less in its leaves and flowering heads.
- Canada: hemp cultivation became legal again on March 12, 1998, when the Industrial Hemp Regulations took effect. Growing hemp always requires a licence from Health Canada.
- United States: the 2018 Farm Bill defined hemp as having no more than 0.3% delta-9 THC on a dry-weight basis. A 2025 law (P.L. 119-37) replaced this with a 0.3% total THC test and excludes many intoxicating hemp-derived products; parts of the new definition take effect on November 12 and December 11, 2026.
Laws change. Check Health Canada or your national regulator before growing, processing or selling hemp products. This page is general information, not legal advice.
The plant, part by part
Almost every part of the hemp plant has an industrial use.
- Seeds
Eaten as hemp hearts, pressed for hempseed oil and protein. Hempseed oil is also a renewable raw material for bio-based resins, including the epoxidized oils used in Hempoxies research.
- Bast fibre
The long, strong fibres in the outer stalk, used for textiles, rope, paper and natural-fibre composites that can replace glass fibre in some parts.
- Hurd (shiv)
The woody inner core of the stalk. Mixed with a lime binder it becomes hempcrete; it is also used for animal bedding, absorbents and particle boards.
- Flowers and leaves
Contain cannabinoids such as CBD. Extraction and sale of cannabinoids are tightly regulated and separate from fibre and grain hemp.
- Whole biomass
Can be processed in a biorefinery into fibres, sugars, oils, carbon materials and energy, so little of the plant is wasted.
Hemp materials science
Hemp is a serious subject of materials research. Some highlights:
- Hempcrete
A mix of hemp hurd and a lime-based binder, used mainly as non-load-bearing insulating walls. Hemp absorbs carbon dioxide as it grows, which is why hempcrete is studied as a low-carbon building material.
- Natural-fibre composites
Hemp fibre reinforces plastics and resins in automotive panels, furniture and consumer products, reducing weight and fossil-based content.
- Hemp-derived carbon nanosheets
In 2013, a University of Alberta team led by Professor David Mitlin turned hemp bast fibre into carbon nanosheets for supercapacitors. Their electrodes delivered 49 kW per kg of power versus 17 kW per kg for standard commercial electrodes, from a material they estimated could be made for under $500 per ton. Marie-Soleil Seshat Landry calls this class of material Mitlinite.
Read about the 2013 study → - Bio-based vitrimers
Vitrimers are a class of plastics that hold their shape like thermosets but can be reshaped, repaired and recycled like thermoplastics. Epoxidized plant oils, including hempseed oil, are researched as renewable building blocks for them.
- Bioplastics
Hemp cellulose and hempseed oil are researched as feedstocks for biodegradable and bio-based plastics.

Questions
Is hemp the same as marijuana?
Both are Cannabis sativa, but industrial hemp is bred and legally defined by its very low THC level: 0.3% or less in Canada. It is grown for seeds, fibre and stalks, not for intoxication.
Do you need a licence to grow hemp in Canada?
Yes. Under the Industrial Hemp Regulations, producing industrial hemp always requires a licence from Health Canada.
What is Hempoxies?
Hempoxies is a Landry Industries research platform for bio-based vitrimer composites made from epoxidized hempseed oil and hemp-derived carbon. Its documents are research proposals and theoretical works, not commercial products.
What is Mitlinite?
Mitlinite is Marie-Soleil Seshat Landry’s name for hemp-derived carbon nanosheets of the type first reported by Professor David Mitlin’s team at the University of Alberta in 2013.
Is hempcrete load-bearing?
Hempcrete is generally used as an insulating infill around a structural frame, not as a load-bearing material.
